Ever heard your hippie bestie talk ‘til the cows come home about a “gut microbiota” or something? Don’t worry, we’re not gonna talk ‘til the cows come home, but we ARE gonna talk until they’ve made it, like, halfway home.
Because this gut microbiota thing has a heck of a lot to do with probiotics, and you’re here to learn all about that.
So, shall we?
What are probiotics?
Okay, let’s start simple. Everyone has a gut inside their bods. Guts are responsible for breaking down the foods you eat and absorbing their nutrients.
It's pretty dang important to keep your gut happy and healthy. This is where probiotics come in.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that have the super important job of introducing beneficial bacteria into your gut microbiota. This helps keep your gut happy, and a happy gut = a happy, healthy you!
Are probiotics good for you?
We’re not health professionals, so we can’t tell you definitively yay or nay. If you want a solid answer, ask your GP in your next check up.
But we can tell you the general consensus. The good bacteria, or microorganisms, can help break down the foods you eat, protect your gut from bad bacteria, amp up your energy, and even support your immune system – bloody superstars.
What is the difference between prebiotics and probiotics?
Let’s keep this super simple, shall we?
Probiotics = introduce the beneficial bacteria into your gut microbiota
Prebiotics = the food source for the bacteria in your gut
What is a probiotic drink?
It’s simple, really! A probiotic drink has a probiotic-like effect on your gut. Remember those little Yakult shots your fam would stock up on (and subsequently leave forgotten in the back of the fridge)? They probably stocked up because of their probiotic impacts, but they are thought to be great at improving gut health and helping people recover from a cold.
But do you know what Yakult is actually? Believe it or not, Yakult is a fermented milk drink. This makes sense, as probiotics are commonly found in fermented food and drink.
This means that kombucha (AKA fermented tea) (AKA our firstborn bevvie) is chock full of live cultures, so it has probiotic-like effects, too! It’s just one of many reasons we love cracking open a kombucha.
Kombucha isn’t the only Remedy bev with probiotic-like effects, though! You can also find them in our other drinks with a base of kombucha – namely our Immune+ Shot and Energy Shot.
